Kaum zu glauben. 15 Jahre ist es bereits her, dass die Backstreet Boys in Deutschland ihre erste Single »We've got it going on« herausbrachten und damit ihre Weltkarriere starteten. Hits wie »Quit playing games« ließen eine ganze Mädchen-Generation schmachten. Heute sind AJ, Nick, Howie und Brian erwachsen, haben die Höhen und Tiefen des Showbusiness durchlebt und sind jetzt endlich angekommen, wie sie im SUPERillu.de-Interview verrieten, das - ganz außer- gewöhnlich - in der Gemeinschaftsdusche der Berliner »Eisbären« stattfand... Ungewöhnliches Treffen
Die Umkleidekabine der Berliner Eishockeymannschaft »Eisbären« in der 02 World: Ein Ort, an dem nach jedem Spiel großes Durcheinander herrscht: Auf 30 qm drängen sich mehr als 20 harte Kerle. Es stinkt wie im Pumakäfig, schweißnasse Trikots liegen auf den Bänken und Handtücher werden achtlos in die Ecken gefeuert. Heute ist die Umkleide leer. Es ist spielfreier Montag. Statt brutalem Sport gibt's diesmal sanfte Töne. Die Backstreet Boys haben sich angekündigt. In der Hauptstadt spielen sie ihr letztes Deutschlandkonzert ihrer »This is us«-Tour.

Herumalbern auf dem Männerklo
Die Umkleide - diesmal wird sie zur Interviewlocation umfunktioniert. Hier treffe ich mit AJ und Brian. In der Gemeinschaftsdusche hat unser Fotograf Michael Handelmann ein provisorisches Fotostudio aufgebaut. Für die zwei Backstreet Boys kein Problem. "Ist doch mal was anderes", meint AJ, während Brian die ungewöhnliche Umgebung nutzt, um herumzualbern. Für unseren Fotografen stellt er sich ans Pissoir und tut so, als hätte er dringend ein kleines Geschäft zu verrichten. Die Backstreet Boys - total ausgelassen und unkompliziert.

Gesangseinlage in der Dusche
Zur gleichen Zeit sitze ich mit AJ bereits auf den bereitgestellten Stühlen in der Gemeinschaftsdusche. "Die Akustik ist super! Perfekt zum Singen!", grinst er und fängt an zu summen. Brian kommt hinzu und trällert seinem Bandkollegen eine Ballade vor, die ich nicht kenne. "Klingt super!", sage ich. "Den Song hab' ich noch nie gehört. Ist er neu?" Brian nickt: "Ja, ich hab' ihn gerade erst geschrieben. Da muss noch ein bisschen dran gefeilt werden." Dabei klang es schon so, als wenn der Song einen festen Platz auf der aktuellen Platte »This is us« hätte. Mit ihrem siebten Studioalbum kehren die Backstreet Boys wieder zu ihrem Ursprung zurück: R'n'B und Pop mit eingängigen Melodien. "Wir wollten wieder Tanzmusik machen, zu der unsere Fans richtig Party machen können."

Die Fans der ersten Stunde
Dass sie ihren Erfolg vor allem ihre treuen Anhängern aus "good old Germany" zu verdanken haben - das haben AJ, Brian, Howie und Nick nie vergessen. Denn ihre Weltkarriere starteten die Backstreet Boys 1995 hier in Deutschland. Wofür in ihrer Heimat, den USA, damals noch keiner ein Ohr hatte, konnte sich hierzulande fast jedes Mädchen ab zehn Jahren begeistern. "Deutschland ist wie unsere zweite Heimat", erklärt AJ. "Hier hat alles begonnen, von hier kommen die Fans der ersten Stunde." In kürzester Zeit war ganz Europa im Backstreet Boys-Fieber. Die Jungs aus den Südstaaten gewannen einen Award nach dem anderen, brachen alle Boygroup-Rekorde und stifteten daraufhin auch weltweit hormonelle Verwirrung bei den Teenie-Girls.

Sex, Drugs, Rock'n'Roll und unzählige Trennungsgerüchte
Doch, wie so oft bei solchen Bilderbuch-Karrieren, folgte nach dem Mega-Hoch der tiefe Fall. Das Leben im harten Musikbusiness forderte seinen Tribut. Zur Jahrtausendwende machte AJ seine Alkohol- und Drogensucht öffentlich. Er begab sich in eine Entzugsklinik, die Band brach die laufende Tour ab. "Ich musste mit meinen Problemen an die Presse gehen", erklärt AJ. "Ich möchte anderen helfen, dass ihnen nicht das gleiche wie mir passiert." Angeheizt wurden die Trennungsgerüchte, als das jüngste Bandmitglied Nick 2002 sein erstes Solo-Album herausbringt.

Auch Brian versuchte es vier Jahre später mit einer Musik-Karriere ohne seine Backstreet Boys-Kollegen. Trotzdem hielt die Band zusammen. Bis zum Sommer 2006. Kevin verkündete den Ausstieg aus der Boyband. Die Backstreet Boys waren nur noch zu viert. "Ein Riesen-Schock!", erinnert sich Brian. "Er weihte uns während unserer Tour in seine Pläne ein. Wir waren fassungslos." Ein neues Mitglied kam nicht infrage. Die übrigen Backstreet Boys machten in Unterzahl weiter - mit Erfolg. Insgesamt gingen in den vergangenen 15 Jahren über 100 Millionen verkaufter Backstreet Boys-Tonträger über die Ladentheken der Welt. Auch zu viert sind sie erfolgreich. Doch ein Auftritt in Originalbestezung ist nicht ausgeschlossen. "Kevin kann zurückkommen, wann er will", meint AJ. "Wir sind auch immer noch befreundet." Und Brian erklärt: "Er ist schließlich auch mein Cousin. Wir haben uns erst letzens in Tokyo getroffen. Ihm geht es blendend."

Endlich angekommen
Nach 15 Jahren Erfolgsgeschichte ist eines kaum zu übersehen: Den Backstreet Boys geht es gut. Dass ihr Album »This is us« heißt, kommt nicht von ungefähr. "Wir fühlen uns jetzt komplett wohl, wir selbst zu sein. Wir müssen uns nicht verstellen," erklärt AJ. Freundinnen verheimlichen, eigenen Wünsche zurückstellen - das müssen die Vier jetzt nicht mehr. Howie und Brian sind verheiratet und glückliche Familienväter. Nick darf offen sagen, dass er vergeben ist und AJ genießt sein Single-Leben. "Wir sind durch Dick und Dünn gegangen, verstehen uns so gut wie nie", freut sich Brian.

Noch immer regnet es Stofftierchen
Die Backstreet Boys sind erwachsen geworden. Und ihre Fans? Ist die Hysterie der Boyband-Hochzeiten nicht vorbei? "Überhaupt nicht", sagt AJ, "auf unseren Konzerten wird immer noch genauso viel gekreischt wie früher. Auch Kuscheltiere fliegen noch auf die Bühne." "Wirklich?" frage ich skeptisch. "Unsere Fans sind mit uns groß geworden, aber die Begeisterung hat nicht abgenommen", erklärt mir Brian. Ganz unrecht haben die Beiden nicht. Eine Stunden später fliegen wirklich Stofftierchen auf die Bühne. Es ist ein bisschen wie früher. Für zwei Stunden kann man wieder Teenager sein und ungehemmt die Schmacht-Songs mitträllern.
