Backstreet Boy AJ McLean Returns Back To Rehab [ Articles ]

A.J. McLean in Rehab

A.J. McLean from the Backstreet Boys has gone into rehab again ... TMZ has learned.

One source tells TMZ McLean has been "out of control" in the last few months because of substance abuse, and it was interfering with plans for the Backstreet Boys' upcoming tour with New Kids on the Block.

Sources say on a Backstreet Boys cruise last month ... A.J. appeared under the influence much of the time.

McLean has battled addiction for years. He was in rehab in both 2001 and 2002 for alcohol and cocaine abuse.

McLean made a cryptic reference on his Twitter account, writing on January 9, "I love u all and wish me luck! I start my sober journey tomm!"

On January 10, McLean tweeted,  "See u on the other side!"

Video shot during a BSB cruise for fans last month shows McLean with what looks like a beer -- amber liquid with foam on top.

UPDATE: A.J. released a statement saying, "For personal reasons, I’ve checked myself into a rehab clinic. With 2011 being a busy year for Backstreet, I want to be healthy and perform & sing for people at my very best and happiest. None of this will affect our current tour plans and I look forward to seeing everyone really soon! Thank you for all of your support and respecting my family and friends privacy during this time."

A.J. McLean Checks Himself into Rehab

Backstreet Boy A.J. McLean has once again entered rehab, he confirms to PEOPLE.

"For personal reasons, I've checked myself into a rehab clinic," McLean says in a statement. "With 2011 being a busy year for Backstreet, I want to be healthy and perform and sing for people at my very best and happiest. None of this will affect our current tour plans and I look forward to seeing everyone really soon! Thank you for all of your support and respecting my family and friends privacy during this time."

McLean, 33, had previously offered clues to his intentions, Tweeting Sunday that "Its gonna be a great year! I love u all and wish me luck! I start my sober journey tomm!"

And then on Monday, he bid his followers farewell: "See u on the other side!"

While he gave no reason why he is seeking treatment, the singer has been in rehab before in 2001 and, again, in 2002 for issues including depression and alcohol abuse.

In 2001, he sought treatment for depression, anxiety and excessive consumption of alcohol. At the time, his bandmate Brian Littrell said McClean was well aware of his issues, which included staying out late partying and then missing work commitments the next day.

"He came to us [and said], 'Guys, I have a problem, and I need to get help,' " Littrell said at the time.

McLean, who took a turn as a solo artist in 2008, is gearing up for a busy summer, during which the Backstreet Boys and New Kids on the Block are due to go on tour together.

TMZ.com was the first to report the rehab news.

Backstreet Boys' A.J. McLean Back In Rehab

Singer tweeted about getting sober days ago.

Just as Backstreet Boys fever is back in full force as the guys gear up to hit the road with New Kids on the Block this summer comes news that BSB's A.J. McLean has returned to rehab.
"For personal reasons, I've checked myself into a rehab clinic," McLean said in a statement to MTV News. "With 2011 being a busy year for Backstreet, I want to be healthy and at my best. Thank you for all of your support and respecting my family and friends' privacy during this time. I'll see you really soon."

TMZ reports that sources close to the pop star say he has been "out of control" as of late due to issues with substance abuse. Reportedly, he was under the influence during much of the Backstreet Boys cruise last month. He allegedly entered rehab, his third time in a decade, because his issues were affecting the planning stages of the NKOTBSB tour, set to begin this June.

A rep for the singer had not responded to MTV News' request for comment at press time.
However the singer did leave some messages for his fans on Twitter that alluded to a possible upcoming stint in rehab. "Thank u all for my bday wishes and tweets:)! Its gonna be a great year! I love u all and wish me luck! I start my sober journey tomm! Ttfn!" he wrote January 9. One day later, he added, "Hey all wish me luck! This is gonna be an amazing year for me and all around me! I love u all and appreciate all the love and support"

McLean previously entered rehab in July 2001, just as the Backstreet Boys planned to kick off their Black & Blue world tour. He also went to rehab the following year in 2002.
"[A.J.] came to us yesterday and said, 'Guys, I need help,' " group member Brian Littrell told MTV News in 2001. "I looked at him in the eyes and said, 'I'm proud of you.' That's the first time he said it to any of us: 'Guys, I have a problem, and I wanna better myself and better the group and better our situation.' "

Backstreet Boy AJ Mclean `in rehab

Backstreet Boy AJ Mclean has gone into rehab, according to US reports.

A celebrity blog claims Mclean, 33, entered the facility because he had become “out of control” due to substance abuse.

His behaviour was reportedly interfering with plans for the Backstreet Boys’ joint tour in June with New Kids on the Block.

Mclean, whose real name is Alexander James Mclean, posted a cryptic message on his Twitter account on January 9 – his 33rd birthday – telling fans he was starting his “sober journey”.
“Thank u all for my bday wishes and tweets,” he wrote. “It’s gonna be a great year! I love u all and wish me luck! I start my sober journey tomm! Ttfn!”

The following day he simply wrote: “See u on the other side!” The boy band star has not tweeted since.
Mclean, who is due to wed girlfriend Rochelle Deanna Karidis in May, has had a well publicised battle with drink and drugs.

He spent time in rehab in 2001 and 2002 to try and overcome alcohol and cocaine abuse.
Last year Mclean spoke about his substance abuse and said he still battles it “every day”.
The singer’s rep has refused to comment on the reports that Mclean is back in rehab.

The Backstreet Boys and New Kids on the Block are set to tour together this summer. McLean says the tour won't be affected.

Last year ended on a high note as the two boy bands performed in Times Square as part of "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve With Ryan Seacrest 2011."

This will be McLean's third stint in rehab. He sought treatment in 2001 and 2002. He turned 33 last week.

Backstreet Boy A.J. McLean in der Reha

Backstreet-Boys-Sänger A.J.
