About AJ McLean

About AJ McLean

Alexander James (AJ) McLean was born in West Palm Beach, FL (09 Jan 1978) to his mother Denise Fernandez (now Denise Solis) & father Bob McLean. He is well-known as the "bad boy" of the Backstreet Boys.

In 1990 he moved to Orlando together with his mother & grandparents (Adolph & Ursula Fernandez) to concentrate on his acting and singing career.

In January 1986 he got his first film role by playing the role of a young psycho by the name of Mike Strauber in 'Truth or Dare?'.

After numerous auditions for various Nickelodeon and Disney projects, including the Nickelodeon show GUTS (1992, competing against Amanda "The Accelerator" Bulger and Jamie "The Jackal" Mendelsohn, and finished with the silver medal. He was in blue and referred to on the show as AJ "Mean" McLean. He had one event win during his appearance, that being a win in the Slam Dunk event) , he landed a role in Nickelodeon's Welcome Freshmen, and in a comedy series called Hi Honey, I'm Home! (In the original unaired pilot, two different actors were initially cast in two roles and were later recast for subsequent episodes. Actress Dee Hoty was originally cast as Elaine Duff, but replaced by Susan Cella. Future Backstreet Boy A. J. McLean was originally cast as Sidney "Skunk" Duff and was replaced by Eric Kushnick. The pilot was then re-shot with the different actors and aired. The original pilot eventually aired during Nickelodeon's "Nick Knew Them When" anniversary marathon on June 27, 1999).

AJ created also an alter ego for his 1st solo performances beside the Backstreet Boys. McLean has occasionally performed in rock/metal clubs around New York under his alter ego 'Johnny NoName' and established a foundation which is called the 'JNN Foundation' to raise funds for diabetes research and other causes like keeping music programs in schools. He also did a nine-city tour to support VH1 Save the Music as Johnny No Name & performed songs by Stone Temple Pilots, Rage Against the Machine, the Commodores, Tonic, Brian McKnight, Wild Cherry and a few Backstreet covers.

      HAVE IT ALL

"After 13 years with the Backstreet Boys, and 75 million records sold worldwide, A.J.'s excited to take a step out on his own and present his music, in his style," his manager, Eric Podwall told a magazine in 2008.

AJ worked for almost 5 years on his debut album. He performed his first solo shows 2 years before he released his album in 2010 (20 Jan 10 Japan) in the US (California) and in Europe (UK, Netherlands, Germany, France, Sweden) - besides Backstreet Boys' Unbreakable World Tour. On stage he performed also 'F*** Marsha', 'Life Is Just' and the Backstreet Boys hit 'Incomplete' which are not released on his solo album.

McLean collaborated with One Republic's Ryan Tedder, JC Chasez ('N SYNC) - who has written 'Teenage Wildlife' and also with the producers Dan Muckala and Kristian Lundin.

In an interview McLean described the album as "kind of a cross between a little bit of rock and funk and a little bit of dance, [...] It's a well-rounded record. I'm really proud of it"

      Others

AJ has also co-written a song which is called 'Shadows' together with Ryan Tedder, originally intended for Leona Lewis. The song is released on Westlife's new Album "Where We Are".

Article (released  October, 20 2009, digitalspy)

Westlife have reportedly been given a power ballad for their upcoming album originally intended for Leona Lewis.

The song, which is called 'Shadows' and was penned by OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder and Backstreet Boys star AJ McLean, was snapped up by Simon Cowell for the Irish boyband.
"Ryan and I wrote the song for the new Backstreet album, but it didn't make it," McLean told the Daily Star.

"When Simon heard it he loved it, and initially wanted it to go on the Leona record. Then he decided as it was more of a boyband song it'd suit Westlife better."

McLean insisted that his own group, who paired up with producer RedOne on new album This Is Us, deserve to be given more credibility.

"Some people wanna put you in a box of what was, and not really grow with you. All we want to do is make great music that we are happy with," he said.

"When you stick a brand name like BSB on a song, sometimes you put a limit on it because people think it’s going to be boyband crap."

Westlife release new single 'What About Now' on October 26. Their new album follows on November 30.

AJ has also formed a new Band which is called !ohyeah! (they changed the name from Death Of Adam to !ohyeah!) The music direction should be a mix of pop, electro & hip hop.

      Private Life

On his birthday in 2010 AJ proposed to his girlfriend Rochelle Deanna Karidis (born Oct 7, 1981) in Las Vegas (Wasted Space), a make-up artist who has also worked for the Backstreet Boys (This Is Us Photoshoot) and Tyler Shields. The couple have plans to marry December 17, 2011 (they've changed the date from May 2011 to November 2011 to December 17, 2011). In January AJ said in an interview that they've first met in 2000 when she was 19 at The Carnival Choreographers Ball. On the other hand Rochelle said that they first met in a restaurant where she has worked in 2005.

On January 10, 2011 AJ checked himself into rehab for the 3rd time (he was in rehab in both 2001 and 2002 for alcohol and cocaine abuse).
Sources said on the BSB cruise last month that A.J. appeared under the influence much of the time. He has been "out of control" in the last few months because of substance abuse, and it was interfering with plans for the Backstreet Boys' upcoming tour with New Kids on the Block.

      AJ released a personal statement:
"For personal reasons, I’ve checked myself into a rehab clinic. With 2011 being a busy year for Backstreet, I want to be healthy and perform & sing for people at my very best and happiest. None of this will affect our current tour plans and I look forward to seeing everyone really soon! Thank you for all of your support and respecting my family and friends privacy during this time."

On October 8th AJ celebrated his Bachelor Party. Under the guests were also ex band member Kevin Richardson and Jojo Wright. Lance Bass was also invited but he wasn't able to go to his party. AJ met up with Kevin at Katsuya and partied also at Beacher's Madhouse in Hollywood, CA.

      Future

AJ is playing several concerts in 2011 with NKOTBSB. In 2012 the band will tour Europe, Australia and Asia (but there won't be any show in Spain and Portugal). Currently he's not active as a solo artist. Also there'll be the 2nd BSB Cruise in December, just a few days before he's getting married (They have a Goth kind of theme going on as celebrity wedding planner Mindy Weiss told OK! magazine. Photographer Tyler Shields is going to marry AJ and Rochelle). There are rumors that former 'N Sync star Lance Bass is teaming up with Joey McIntyre, A.J. Mclean and Bobby Brown for a battle of the boy-bands on a new reality show.
