Boys going solo

Carter has just released a single with Jennifer Paige called Beautiful

Nick Carter was the first Backstreet Boy to give the solo thing a bash. Now or Never, his debut album, was released in 2002, reaching number 17 on the Billboard 200 charts. Carter has just released a single with Jennifer Paige called Beautiful.

Brian Littrell waited four years to before he also tried his hand flying solo. Releasing his first album, Welcome Home, with the title track as the first single on May 2, Littrell was targeting a slightly different audience, his offerings reaching the top three on the Billboard Christian Charts.

A.J. Maclean decided to go solo just last year and says the experience has helped him grow in more ways than one. “I started to play some of my solo stuff on tour and it seemed to go down pretty well, so I thought I’d give it a try,” he said.

“My first album is a montage of my life,” he told tabloid! “The inspiration for my music has been so varied. Anything from break-ups, drinking problems, the drug abuse I’ve overcome, my father… It’s all very emotional, but it was what was happening at this time in my life.”

While on the Unbreakable tour, McLean impressed Backstreet fans with songs including London and Drive By Love.

Around the same time as A.J., Howie Dorough began work on his first solo album. His new material was first performed on the Backstreet Boys’ Unbreakable tour earlier this year, wowing fans with a song called She’s Like the Sun. Last year he recorded a duet with Philippine’s singer Sarah Geronimo.

Plans for Christmas

Whether on tour or planning the next album, A.J. McLean says as much as the boys are like their own family, they also like to enjoy a bit of space. “We live in each other’s pockets a lot of the time so it’s nice to get some space and perspective sometimes too,” he says.

“We live in the US, but not close enough to pop over for dinner every night. We work so hard when we’re touring to make sure we deliver the best show we possibly can for our fans and it can be so exhausting. I think we are all looking forward to Christmas and having a break.

“We will all be with our friends and families and it gives you a chance to catch up.”

Busy, busy, Backstreet Boys

tabloid! chatted to one of the biggest boy bands ever ahead of their gig

By Kelly Crane, Staff Reporter, Published: 00:00 December 17, 2009

We're busy, busy boys," says Backstreet Boy A.J. McLean mid yawn.

"Sometimes I'm not sure what time of day it is because we're here, there and everywhere."

Over nearly 18 years of crazy highs and even crazier lows, the five that then became four have conquered both the album and singles charts, stepped out alone pursuing various solo careers and battled things out in courts. Having seen it all and come through the other side in almost one piece, McLean tells tabloid! there is no better feeling than the way the boys feel today.

"We were so naïve," he says ahead of their first concert in the Middle East tonight at The Palladium, Dubai.

"The good, the bad and the ugly have hit us hard over the years, but everything happens for a reason. We are a lot more careful now than we've ever been before. More protective, I think. As a group you mould yourself that way."

A new album, This Is Us, hit the shelves just a month ago, giving McLean the chance to chat about life on tour, what to expect and who the nose-pickers of the band are.

He takes us on a journey through the band's history through their albums.

Backstreet Boys (1992-'96)

The brainchild of boyband producer Lou Pearlman, the Backstreet Boys were manufactured from day one with auditions held in the US to be a part of a new "clean-cut" boy band.

"It all seems such a long time ago but it's also great to look back. We've come so far."

Backstreet's Back (1996-'97)

Having discovered Pearlman was taking a huge cut of their money, leaving the boys with just enough to survive, the group filed a lawsuit against him. They won the courtroom battle after many years.

Millennium (1997-'99)

Most of the Backstreet Boys' better known songs are on this album, including I Want It That Way, Larger Than Life and Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely.

"Our latest album is, in my opinion, comparable to Millennium. That's a big thing for us to say, but there are so many great hit songs on this record."

Black & Blue (2000-'01)

"We'd really been through the wringer at this point. The court battles had taken their toll and we were trying to show people the strength we have.

"It was times like this you needed to remember the small things and keep [your] spirits high. The guys are like family to me, and we know everything about each other. Let me tell you there is a lot of nose, dirty feet and finger picking among us."

Never Gone (2005-'06)

"A while since the last album, this was just to remind people we never went away."

Unbreakable (2007-'08)

After the 2005-2006 tour, Kevin Richardson left the group to start a family. The four remaining members have always refused to rule out a possible return for the singer. "You never know what the future could hold. Watch this space..."

About this album, McLean says: "I think when Kevin left, a lot of people — including the critics — thought that would be the end. They expected us to fall apart and disappear as if we never existed, and this album was our way of showing we never went away."

This Is Us (2009)

"The venue in Dubai is a bit smaller so we're bringing out the B-show rather than the A-show. But it's still our A-show, if you know what I mean," says McLean.

Sensing my confusion he laughs and tries eagerly to explain. Worried he was sitting on the other end of the line rolling his eyes at me, I re-read my notes to check it was just as confusing as it first sounded.

"I mean it's not our A-show — with all the cast and crew of dancers, because the venue isn't big enough. But we'll definitely give our A-show with regards to the performance, because we always do. There will be songs from every album and everyone will recognise something. It's something the parents and kids can share," he says."A positive show with positive music — a family affair. It's a good getaway for people to forget their problems for two hours."It's starting a rebirth of Backstreet Boys, which is awesome."

Article about Westlife [AJ McLean mentioned]

MUSIC: Westlife’s surprising new album

The boys are back in town

Ciara Moynihan

Westlife’s much-anticipated brand new album, ‘Where We Are’, was released two weeks’ ago. Cue girly screaming!
The first single, the surprisingly indie-influenced ‘What About Now’ was released a month earlier, on October 26, reaching No 2 in the Irish charts in the first week it came out (pipped at the post by the unstoppable Geordie Cheryl Cole).
In an interview with the Daily Mirror, Mark Feehily explained that the band “wanted the first single from our new album to be somewhere between the Westlife sound our fans know and love, and the new direction we’re heading in. We’ve been experimenting with a fresh vibe on this record. After eleven years we see this as phase two of the Westlife story.”
Indeed, the album contains other many surprises, including the track ‘Shadows’, which was written for by Ryan Tedder and AJ McLean for the Backstreet Boys’ seventh album This Is Us but didn’t make the track listing. It was subsequently purchased by everyone’s favourite cranky record-label owner Simon Cowell for Leona Lewis’s second album Echo, but it was decided that it better suited a boy band and was consequently given to Westlife to record. Another style departure comes with ‘The Difference’ an anthemic number with crescendo percussion.
While the songs are immediately recognisable as Westlife classics, complete with soaring melodies and stirring lyrics, the boys have been given an undeniably contemporary twist. It remains to be seen whether this will be the album that finally allows the boys to break into that elusive market, America. One thing’s for sure, though: the album will be found in many a Christmas stocking both here and in the UK.

Interview with Jimmy Emerzian , AJ McLean´s musician

1-When did you meet A.J?
I met AJ in June of 2003.

2-Do You remember the first time that You worked with him? How was it?
Yes, I remember. It was at the Roxy in Hollywood, in a special performance for the birthday party of his talent agent Eric Podwall and actor Shane West. It was a blast. We played Brick House and Play That Funky Music. AJ had a lot of energy, and back then he was still break dancing. We hung out back stage and he was very laid back and we talked about things from music to surfing.

3-Which was your favourite concert with him?
My favorite concerts with AJ were probably Berlin (May 2008) and Paris (June 2008), for musical and personal reasons.

4- Did You have any funny moment with him?
Well, one thing would be that the first time I visited the Eiffel Tower in Paris, it was not with my wife. It was with just AJ and Marcus, his security guard. I think it was his first time too. I have video of it somewhere. It was a gloomy day and when we saw it standing there in the rain, we both thought it was pretty ugly...like a giant oil rig. But later that night, I was happy that I saw it all lit up because it was much more spectacular that way. One other funny (but maybe slightly disturbing) memory I will never forget is AJ trying to play trumpet in nothing but his underwear, in the dressing rooms of the Amsterdam Paradiso.

5-Your favourite song of A.J is...
My favorite song of AJ's is "I Quit," although there are a couple he played for me from his private recordings that are really, really good. I don't remember all of the names (I just remember one, but I won't mention it here), but if they're ever released, I'd be happy.

6-Define to A.J in three words...
Passionate, Intense, and Charismatic

Interview with AJ McLean and Brian Littrell

Es folgte die herzzerreissende Ballade "I'll never break your heart".

Translation with Google

"The typical boy bands won't exist anymore"

An insider interview with the Backstreet Boys

In the mid-90s in Germany a real boy band boom broke out. Even in this country a number of groups emerged, which all but disappeared in the cave. The Backstreet Boys are the only survivors from that time, but they know: "Something like us will not give more." Two members of the Backstreet Boys, Brian and AJ, to explain the phenomenon of boy bands that is really none.

The Backstreet Boys (BSB) reported in the Jako Arena in Bamberg, in the context of their world tour Germany her last concert. Similar to the former glory days of the Americans romped to female fans loaded down with mattresses and blankets in front of the entrance gates and waited in the cold to the inlet. It was those fans who are used today as the very front in the front row to sing along to cheer for their idols, and from the youth want. Just over ten years, had the young women can still chauffeured by their mothers to the shows. Today it is different. Most BOD supporters are now even have a driving license. And instead of your best friend, now has with the friend's boy band in concert.

Also in the Backstreet Boys show that sold for more than 75 million recordings worldwide remains the most successful boy band, has changed a lot in their professional careers. 2006 Kevin Richardson (left 36), the band for personal reasons. The former teen quintet from the 90s Brian Littrell (34), AJ McLean (31), Howie Dorough (36) and Nick Carter (29) now deny four of the show. Private Howie and Brian are both married both have kids. Nick and A.J. are solo.

The highs and lows in the music business have experienced the guys in their now 16-year-old band's career and experience the dark side of fame on her own body. But they are still here. You've survived, the boy band mania of the '90s and bands such as Caught in the Act, N'Sync, East 17, left Worlds Apart and bed and breakfast behind. Even before announcing Take That and the forefathers of all the boy bands, the New Kids On The Block, their comeback came the boys of 2005 after a three year break back into the limelight. They were just a bit sooner than everyone else, or, as they say, "Never Gone" (never been away). But A.J. is sure: "Something like the typical boy bands, there will be no more." "The days of dancing pretty boy, who is singing on stage and behind him four handsome men are, in my opinion, over."
The times have changed

Formed when the boy band mogul Lou Pearlman, the band 1993 to one of the most successful teen bands, he used the same components that made the other boy bands have become stars: five attractive young men who can dance and vocal numbers with the hearts of an entire generation of teenage girls . Melt

Well two years have had the hard Backstreet Boys through the training phase of Pearlman and manager Johnny Wright to go before they could enter 1995 for the first time on German soil. The success came almost overnight. With their first single "We've got it going on" they conquered the German charts and it sold around 400,000 copies. This was followed by the heartbreaking ballad "I'll never break your heart." From then on, the hysteria was about the five guys from the U.S. take its course. At that time, people spoke of the inexorable "BOD fever", the first in Germany and then spread into the rest of Europe. In 1996 they released their eponymous album, "Backstreet Boys" who went more than 10 million times on the counter. That same year, the British band Take That announced their separation. Pearlman's plan worked - and the successor of Take That were found. "There was a special time for our group, in which we were very successful," said Brian. "Is a new boy band that wants to provoke in this business again as a boom, these days have a hard time, because the times have changed easily," he says, knowing full well.

Teen bands resolved boy band era-from

They are the teenage bands that have replaced the boy band era. Tokio Hotel and the boys of the Jonas Brothers from the United States are currently the most successful. Both groups sing and play instruments, instead of moving to lasciviously. The fact that the Backstreet Boys were less musical, holds AJ as absurd: "We can also play instruments, but that's not our focus. We see ourselves as entertainers and performers. We stand on the stage to sing and dance. The Jonas Brothers are a new generation, not a boy band but a boy band. " He also said that BSB has never seen a boy band: "We are a vocal harmony group like Shai and The Temptations." The boy band image in Europe has applied to them, because there began at that time the market with a growing teenage bands. It wanted only to sing the Five, "Boyz II Men, The Temptations and the Four Tops, one has never called a boy band. Not even New Edition, Bobby Brown has started where. When we came to Europe, there was this large number of boy bands, The group sounded and looked like that. But we just wanted to just sing and not be a boy band "says Brian. Nevertheless, they have gone down as one of the best known and most successful boy bands in history.

No boy band phenomenon

The phenomenon of boy bands can not explain the Backstreet Boys themselves. Even better - they find that there is none at all. "There are perhaps at the Backstreet Boys are some notable features, such as our distinctive sound or stage shows," is counting on Brian. Maybe Lou Pearlman could explain the phenomenon of boy bands, it does not sat since 2008 because of millions of fraud in prison. Even the Backstreet Boys and N'Sync are with "Big Poppa" have had their problems. Pearlman allegedly paid his charges less than they would have contracted to be sure - so it can be found on various Internet sites. And despite all the differences, the music mogul, they still grateful: "He has supported us financially and we set up. In the beginning, we were certainly grateful to him, but things have been different," says AJ

Three Rules for Success Music Business

Today, Lou Pearlman, the Backstreet Boys no longer need that drives them forward. You know the business is now fairly well and know: "If you want to stay in the business long-term success," they say, "we need three things: patience, passion and joy."

"You have to be with you at peace and know who you are before to get involved in the business, because if it all at some time is over and nobody likes you, then you're hopefully still just as before your career," says Brian.

Except for AJ's drinking problem, and Nick's scandalous relationship with Paris Hilton, the guys seem to be unscathed from the boy band-jungle have fought. They have always remained faithful to the floor and the band. With "This is us," they have released in October, her seventh album. A next is already planned.

Interview with AJ McLean & Nick Carter [Bunte GER]

Backstreet Boys
Die Schmusejungs packen aus

6 Dezember 2009
Bunte Magazin

Backstreet Boys
The cuddle boys blow the whistle

For the past 16 years, the Backstreet Boys 'girls' hearts collectively bring with songs about love, longing and Teen dreams to melt. With their new album "This is us," present themselves as the erstwhile youths seasoned men - both musically and humanly. And even though Backstreet Boy Brian Litrell is just suffering from swine flu and so had some promotional events in New York City to be postponed to know the Backstreet Boys: The road will go to the top.

TOPIC: Online: You are the most successful boy band in the world. Your success story began in 1993, which continues to this day. You do not you sometimes feel like an old couple who lived through the decades together?

Nick Carter: Basically, yes, but we learn something new every day about each of us. And that's the beauty of it. We have the great fortune to a family inside and outside the band to have. We are five brothers. Kevin is still our brother, even though he is no longer in the band. We are a tight-knit course. We have taken an oath, which may dispense with any more or want.

AJ: (laughs) Exactly! If one wants to flee, we will chase him and get around the corner!

Brothers for eternity sounds great, but it is sometimes you do not belong on your nerves?

AJ: We know the buttons of others that we need to press to go on our nerves and to know the buttons that we need to press to make us laugh. Each of us is the other for so long a part of life that we know the brightest and darkest chapters of each.

Say, you also talk to each other, if you have personal problems?

Nick Carter: I would throw myself for each of the guys in the band in front of a bullet, because I know that each of them would do the same for me too. It has created a camaraderie, which can be explained only with difficulty.

Some married, others are still single

If you you look at the past 16 years, how has your personal life and your life changed as a musician?

AJ: Some of us are now married and have children, of course, changes everything, because it shifts the weighting of values. The band is suddenly no longer the only thing in life that brings you fulfillment. For those of us who are still single, the band is all we have. Howie, Brian and Kevin also see things differently now.

Often imitated but never duplicated. With over 100 million sold records you are officially the most successful boy band in the world. What is your secret that you even after such a long time are still top?

Nick Carter: Never say no, do not accept defeat and never give it up. We have always set new and higher goals, have looked with joy in the future, without repeating mistakes of the past. Many artists live only in the successes of the past, we've never done.

Nick, lately, you can follow your life now on Twitter. Why? I would think that someone who is so often the public has no desire to make public even his private life ...

Nick Carter: Hmm ... maybe you're right, but I like it simply because I like to write and everything else can post there, simple thoughts or selbstverfasste poems. I've been using Twitter more as a blog.

AJ: Nick has set itself with Twitter pretty hard on the nettles. He wanted an e-mail with all sorts of data such as address, phone number, phone number forward, but unfortunately all this information ended up on Twitter. Within a minute, shouting like crazy girls from all over the world on his cell phone, which was really crass.

Love tattoos, or rather not?

Nick, You have once said that it is for someone who is constantly in the spotlight, very difficult to find true love because you never know whether they are really well off the fame is as a man is loved. Did you find the glory of the great love, then hurt more?

Nick Carter: It has its good and its bad sides of being famous. The trick is to balance private and personal. Over time I learned to read people and their intentions even better.

The tattoo of your ex Paris Hilton have you been with a skull painted over. Would you ever let you sail again for a girl a tattoo?

Nick Carter: I would do it again. When a relationship comes to an end, just leaves a scar, and often in two respects.

AJ: I've also let me sail times a tattoo with the name of a great love, but I would never do. The only name that I would get a tattoo I have ever, is the name of my children and my mother. And has both the girl was not at all happy about the tattoo and said only: Why on earth did you do that? Since I made up with her.

Apart from the stress of romantic relationships with each of you have suffered through hard times right. AJ, you have your drug and alcohol problems overcome. How did you get that out?

AJ: The band and my family have helped me, and I've realized one thing: I'm not perfect and does not even pretend to be perfect. I know that we are often seen as role models, and since, of course, weigh every misstep doubly difficult. But most important is not the end of the error, but the way how to deal with it.
